Choosing a Heartfelt Mother’s Day Card, and the Stories Behind Mine
Share
Mother’s Day has always felt like one of those days that carries more weight than we expect.
It is easy enough to buy a card. But choosing a heartfelt Mother’s Day card that truly reflects what your mum means to you can feel much harder. How do you sum up years of care, patience, reassurance and unconditional love in a few lines?
When I design my Mother’s Day cards, I am not starting with trends or colours. I am starting with a story. A real moment. A season of life. A feeling I wished someone would say out loud.
If you are wondering how to choose a meaningful Mother’s Day card this year, perhaps it begins with asking what your mum might need to hear most.
Here are the stories behind mine.

For the Mum Who Needs Reassurance
Some seasons of motherhood are heavy.
This design grew out of conversations with friends who had just become mums. The kind where you ask how they are going and the answer is layered. Sleepless nights. Hospital visits. The invisible mental load that no one really sees.
Underneath it all there is often doubt. Am I doing this right. Am I giving enough. Should I be coping better than this.
From the outside I could see how much they were carrying. I kept thinking about how rarely anyone says the simple reassuring things mums often need to hear.
So I created a Mother's Day card with a message that is quiet but powerful. You're a Great Mum.
The artwork was designed to reflect that feeling. Soft botanical elements and gentle hand lettering create something calm, sincere and reassuring.
If someone you love has been quietly holding everything together, you can see the You're a Great Mum Mother's Day card here.

For the Mum You Still Lean On
There are moments in adulthood when independence falls away.
I created the I’ll Always Need My Mum Mother’s Day card during a time when I was properly unwell. The kind of sick where even simple things felt overwhelming.
My mum showed up the way she always has. Making sure I was eating properly. Checking that I was drinking enough water. Quietly keeping an eye on me throughout the day.
It reminded me that growing older does not mean growing out of needing your mum.
The artwork for this design draws on Australian botanicals, with warm yellow banksias and soft pink tones layered through the florals. Small swallowtail orchid butterflies move through the illustration, inspired by one that appeared in our family garden around the time my grandma passed away.
If your relationship with your mum is one you still lean on, you can see the I’ll Always Need My Mum Mother’s Day card here.

For the Mum You Would Never Swap
Gratitude is not always loud.
Sometimes it is steady. It sits quietly in the background of your life and shows up in small, consistent ways. A phone call. A message. Support when you need it most.
So Glad You’re My Mum was inspired by that quiet realisation that you would not trade her for anyone else.
The design leans into deep reds and burgundy tones inspired by the colours my own mum has always loved. The lettering is hand drawn, personal and simple.
If you are looking for a heartfelt Mother’s Day card that expresses gratitude without being overly sentimental, this one speaks softly but clearly.

For the Bold and Vibrant Mum
Some mums are bright. Strong. Full of life.
Best Mum Ever was inspired directly by mine.
The florals sit in rich red and warm orange tones, featuring waratahs, banksias, grevilleas and proteas painted in watercolour. Red has always been one of her favourite colours, so it felt natural to build the design around shades she loves.
While the phrase itself is classic, I wanted this handmade Mother’s Day card to feel vibrant rather than generic.
If your mum has a big presence and an even bigger heart, this might be the one.

For the Mum Who Loves Something Simple
At the beginning of this year, I started a small creative practice called Doodle a Day. It was about creating without pressure and letting ideas form naturally.
In that process, I sketched a loose floral arrangement in soft blush tones that I kept returning to. Eventually I painted it properly in watercolour, refining the layers and shapes.
The result became the Mum Mother’s Day card. Just one word in my hand lettering, surrounded by florals and Picasso beetles with teal detailing.
It is simple. Quiet. Thoughtful.
If you are drawn to a modern, handmade Mother’s Day card that feels understated but meaningful, this design carries that tone.

For the Traditional at Heart
Some people love a classic Happy Mother’s Day card.
This design is filled with soft pink florals inspired by my grandma. She loved pink. I do not. But her home was always full of blooming flowers, front and back.
I painted this design around the time we knew she was nearing the end of her life. The pink proteas, magnolias and flowering gum became a quiet way of honouring her.
Even though pink has never been my colour, painting it felt like holding onto something gentle and familiar.
If you are looking for a traditional floral Mother’s Day card with a personal story behind it, this one may feel right.
Choosing a Meaningful Mother’s Day Card
Choosing a Mother’s Day card is less about finding the most elaborate design and more about recognising the emotional connection behind it.
Encouragement. Gratitude. Dependence. Celebration. Simplicity. Tradition.
Each card in this collection began with a real story and was painted by hand before being printed locally in Australia.
