Swallowtail Wattle

This card was painted during COVID, in a quiet moment of grief after the loss of a beloved grandmother. On one of the first days of being able to venture further from home, a walk among blooming wattle sparked something. Back at the painting desk, the wattle took shape in soft yellow watercolour, but instead of green stems and leaves, pink kept finding its way onto the brush. Grandma had always loved pink.

The butterflies came from a different moment. After her passing, a white butterfly in the garden became something to look for, a quiet hope. And then one afternoon, glancing out the window, two butterflies appeared together: a small white butterfly and just beside it, a stunning black and white orchid swallowtail. That was her.

The finished design brings it all together: a delicate branch of Australian wattle in yellow and pink watercolour, with three butterflies among the blooms. One is nestled in among the buds, one sits with wings open on a leaf, and one is in flight.

It's a card for birthdays, for sympathy, for thank yous, or for anyone who just needs something genuinely beautiful sent their way. Display it or frame it, it works either way.
